[1X] EAC Crew Operations Support Engineer

To support the growth of our company at the European Astronautical Center in Cologne (Germany) we are looking for a Crew Operations Support Engineer who will provide operational support to the ECOS Team at the European Astronaut Centre.

The ECOS team is a cross-divisional entity acting as a User Operations Centre (UOC) in the ESA ISS operations community. With this respect, the mandate and duty of the ECOS team is to support the ESA ISS Operations Community and Services as an operations entity for technology demonstrators, payloads, and system activities on ISS in the area of medical operations, crew support, and training. This task/mandate comprises the implementation of operational preparation, integration, and operations engineering activities as well as the operational execution of activities on ISS, including data distribution to the Principal Investigators (PI).

DUTIES

From the moment a payload is assigned, you will be responsible for:

  • Supporting the development phase (participation in CDR, PAR, FAR).
  • Supporting the Payload Integration Managers (PIM) with inputs to Payload Integration Agreements (PIA), Cold Stowage Forms, PIM schedules, and other relevant increment integration documentation.
  • Reviewing of Activity Requirements Document (ARD).
  • Developing the Experiment Operations Assessment Report (OAR).
  • Developing the Mission Operations Implementation Concept (MOIC).
  • Developing the Flight and Ground Procedures (incl. validation and support of review life cycle).
  • Providing planning inputs, according to the EPIC provided guidelines and milestones (incl. support of the review process).
  • Defining experiment Ground Rules and Constraints (Gr&Cs).
  • Supporting the development of experiment-related Flight Rules and PL Regulations.
  • Supporting the development of experiment-related (Joint) Ops Interface Procedures (J/OIP).
  • Supporting astronaut and Flight Controllers training (e.g. transfer of technical expertise to the assigned instructor, participation in training dry-run).
  • Supporting the Certificate of Flight Readiness (CoFR) process and milestones.
  • Developing an Experiment Sequence Test (EST) Plan and EST Report.
  • Implementing the experiment EST (incl. the conduction of a Test Readiness Review and Post Test Review).
  • Developing payload-related documentation like the experiment Commissioning Plan and Maintenance Plan.
  • Implementing on-console support during in-flight sessions.
  • Participation in operational meetings and boards during mission preparation and throughout the mission itself.
  • Support Anomaly Resolution by writing Anomaly Reports (AR) and following up their resolution.
  • Implementation of Post-Increment tasks:
    • Lessons Learned identification.
    • Support data transfer to Principal Investigators and to the Science Data Center (SDC).

Depending on your profile and experience, you can be considered for the ECOS Team Management appointment, consisting on the following additional tasks:

  • Managing the relationship with EAC stakeholders for the provision of ECOS resources and other related topics.
  • Managing the resources and the day-to-day activities of the ECOS team at EAC (chairing of regular meetings, defining action items and their implementation, coordinating manpower resources allocation, etc.).
  • Support EAC Management and ESA HRE-OO team in defining the evolution of the ECOS Team with respect to future projects and programs, specifically LUNA and Gateway/ARTEMIS.
  • Providing support to ISS ESA Operations Team within HRE-OO, by:
    • Supporting the management and implementation of the ISS Operations Team (HRE-OO) managed contracts with Operations Centres and industry in terms of proposal evaluation, change request definition, and implementation monitoring, measuring KPIs and deliverables.
    • Supporting ESA Statements of Work development and Engineering Change Requests.
    • Conducting, managing, and monitoring operations implementation of new Science Experiment Facilities projects.
    • Participating in the ESA ISS Operations Control Board and monitoring actions follow-up and implementation

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • Master in Aerospace Engineering or another relevant discipline, combined with at least 3 years of relevant experience.
  • ESA Flight Controller certification.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
  • High operational efficiency and proven results in the area of relationship management, and cooperation with various customers and stakeholders.
  • Able to work autonomously.
